THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The general assembly is the only major organ of the United Nations in which all members are represented. Each member may send five delegates, five alternate delegates, and as many advisers as it wishes. However, each member nation has only one vote.
The general assembly elects a new president and a number of vice presidents at the beginning of each annual session. The president’s main duty is to lead the assembly’s discussion and direct its work
Powers. The general assembly is responsible in same way for every organ of the United Nations. It elects or takes part in electing the members of the other major organs, and it directs the operations of some UN bodies. The general assembly also controls the UN’s budget. It decides how much money each member should contribute and how much of the UN’s funds each UN body should receive.
Meetings and voting. The general assembly holds one regular session each year, beginning on the third Tuesday in December and lasting about three months. A special session may be called if either the Security Council or a majority of member states requests it. Several special sessions have been called to discuss such matters as peacekeeping and finances. The secretary general, the assembly president and an under-secretary sit on stage. Such meeting can be called on 24 hours’ notice if peace is threatened and the Security Council has not acted. Any nine members of the Security Council or a majority of the UN members may call an emergency special session. Such sessions have been held for serious situations in the Middle East, Hungary, and other parts of the world.
Committees. The UN charter permits the general assembly to create as many committees as it needs to help to help carry on its work. The assembly has set up seven main committees and the special political committee. Every member of the general assembly-thus ever UN member-may have a representative on all these committees.
The first committee discusses political and security questions and arms control. The special political committee helps the first committee with its tremendous volume of work. The second committee deals with economic and financial questions, the third with social and cultural matters, and the fourth with problems of countries that is not self-governing. The fifth committee handles administrative and budget matters, and the sixth handles questions of law. Each committee studies the problems that have been assigned to it and makes recommendations to the general assembly.
The assembly has also set up other committees. They help organize and conduct each assembly session, advise the second and fifth committees on financial and budget matters, or deal with problems involving nuclear energy, colonialism and peacekeeping.

Individual and Market Demand

Topic 3 – Individual and Market Demand

Outline:

I)                   The Effects of Changes in Price
II)                The Effects of Changes in Income
III)             Income and Substitution Effects
IV)             Market Demand Curves
V)                Elasticities of Demand
VI)             Consumer Surplus

I)                   The Effects of Changes in Price

Q: Holding income, preferences, and the prices of other goods constant, how will a change in the price of X affect the quantity of X purchased?

Begin with the Price-Consumption Curve (PCC)…

A) Price-Consumption Curve

Price-Consumption Curve (PCC) – Holding income, preferences, and the price of Y constant, the PCC for X is the set of optimal bundles that are traced out as the price of X varies.

It is found by connecting the locus of tangencies (between indifference curves and the budget line) that results as the budget line is rotated. (see diagram)

Use this information to plot the individual’s demand curve…

B) Individual Demand Curve

Individual Demand Curve – A curve that plots the relationship between the quantity of X consumed and the price of X, holding income, preferences, and the prices of other goods constant.

To derive the demand curve for a particular consumer,

Record the price-quantity combinations from the PCC in a table

I)                   The Effects of Changes in Income

Q: Holding preferences and the prices of X and Y constant, how will a change in income affect the quantity of X purchased?

Begin with the Income-Consumption Curve (ICC)…

A)         Income-Consumption Curve

Income-Consumption Curve (ICC) – Holding preferences and the prices of X and Y constant, the ICC for X is the set of optimal bundles that is traced out as income varies. (see diagram)

Use this information to plot the individual’s Engel curve…

B)         Engel Curve

Engel Curve – A curve that plots the relationship between the quantity of X consumed and income, holding preferences and prices constant.

To derive the Engel curve for a particular consumer,

-          Record the income-quantity combinations from the ICC in a table

-          Plot these points in quantity-income space (see diagram)

-          Upward sloping for normal goods; downward sloping for inferior goods

II)                Income and Substitution Effects of a Price Change

-          When a price changes, there are actually two distinct things going on.

-          Consider the case of a price increase.

(i)                             The Income Effect: The increase in price reduces the consumer’s purchasing power (since M/Px falls).

(ii)                           The Substitution Effect: The increase in price gives the consumer an incentive to substitute away from the good whose price has risen.

-          The substitution effect is always away from the good whose price has risen.

-          The direction of the income effect depends on whether the good is normal or inferior.

-          The total effect of the price change is the sum of the income and substitution effects.

Graphically, we isolate the two effects by constructing a hypothetical budget line that is:

Parallel to the “new” budget line, but tangent to the “old” indifference curve

Income effect is shown as the difference between the hypothetical budget line and the new budget line.

Note that since these budget lines are parallel to one another, they represent the effect of a change in income, holding prices (the slope of the budget line) constant.

Substitution effect is shown as a movement along the original indifference curve after the income effect has been “canceled out” by (hypothetically) giving the  consumer just enough income to return them to their original indifference curve (or hypothetically taking income away in the case of a price decrease).

Example 1 – Price increase (see diagram)

Example 2 – Price decrease (see diagram)

Giffen Goods

-          The overwhelming majority of goods have downward sloping demand curves.

-          However, the theory does not rule out the possibility that demand curves could be upward sloping.

-          Goods with upward sloping demand curves are called Giffen Goods.

-          Since the substitution effect of a price increase is always negative, a good can only be Giffen if:

(1)               It is an inferior good.
(2)               The income effect is larger than the substitution effect.

-          For this reason, Giffen goods are most likely to arise in cases where consumers spend a large fraction of their income on an inferior good (so that the income effect will necessarily be large).

Example? The potato in 19th century Ireland

Q: Is there a condition that we can impose that will guarantee a downward-sloping demand curve?

THE GEOGRAPHY OF THE UNITED STATES (NORTH AMERICA)

The United States has an area of 9372571 square kilometers. The country excluding Alaska and Hawaii, can subdivided into seven major land regions. These regions are; The Appalachian highlands, the coastal lowlands, the interior plains, the Ozark-Ouachita highlands, the rocky mountains, the western plateaus basins and ranges and the pacific ranges and lowlands.
The Appalachian highlands. Extended from the northern tip of Maine southwestward to Alabama. This ragged region has many mountain ranges.
The white mountains and the green mountains of northern new England are old mountains, won down but craggy in some places. Southern New England consists mostly of hilly land. New England’s chief river is the Connecticut. The Adirondack upland of northern New York includes mountains and many beautiful lakes.
The coastal lowlands. Extended from southern Maine across the eastern and southern United States to eastern Texas. Forests of hickory, oak, pine and other trees are common throughout the lowlands. The region has three subdivisions; the piedmont, the Atlantic coastal plain and the gulf coastal plain.
The interior plains. Occupy a huge expanse of land that stretches from the Appalachian highlands in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west. Glaciers covered much of the region during the ice age. They stripped the topsoil from parts of Michigan,Minnesota and Wisconsin and carved out thousands of lakes, today much of this area is heavily forested. Further, south in parts of Illinois, in Indiana, lowa and Ohio, the glaciers flattered the land and deposited rich soil ideal for growing crops. The plains slope gradually upward from east to west and get progressively drier.
The Ozark-Ouachita highlands. Rise up between the interior plains and coastal lowlands. The highlands form a scenic landscape in southern Missouri, northwest Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. The region is named for the Ozark Plateau and the Ouachita mountains. Rivers and streams have cut deep gorges through the rugged highland terrain. The highlands include forested hills, artificial lakes and many underground caves and gushing springs.
The Rocky Mountains. Form the largest mountain system in North America. They extend from northern Alaska, through Canada and western United States to northern New Mexico.

Educational system of the United Kingdom (UK)

The four lands that make up United Kingdom (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales) have different histories and distinctive cultures. The UK educational systems are similar in general structure but cultural differences have influenced their organization as well as attitudes, standards and values.

Education is divided into three stages, primary education, secondary education and further and higher education. Full-time education is compulsory between the age of 5 (earlier than in other countries) and 16. Avery high proportion of young people continues in full-time education, or part-time education and training until the age of 18. Education during the primary and secondary stages is general rather than vocational.

Nursery schools. In each educational system, some provision is made below compulsory school age to attend classes. Nursery schools take children from the age of 2. Nursery classes in some primary schools have children from the age of 3.
Primary schools. Most children in the UK begin their school education at the age of 5. T first they take part in the play activities. Later they start to learn definite skills, especially in reading, writing and arithmetic.
Some English LEA’s retain the traditional infant school for 5 to 7 year-olds, and junior schools for 7 to 11 year-olds.
Secondary schools. The majority of secondary schools are coeducational. They are organized differently in educational systems. In England and Wales, most children transfer to comprehensive secondary schools varies in their organization and size. Some cater for the full ager range of 11 to 18. Under many LEA’s, schools have an age range of 11 or 12 to 16; pupils over the age of 16 attend a sixth form college.
Further education. Further education refers to a very kind of education activity for people over the school leaving age. However, the term higher education is generally used to refer to courses for which the minimum entry requirement is normally two passes in the GCEexamination at Advanced level. Further education includes vocational education, general education, and social and recreational activities.
Vocational education. A high proportion of further education (provided in technical colleges, colleges of art, or agricultural colleges and institutes) is vocational in character. About half of the students in further education follow vocational courses, more than a quarter take non-examined courses, and the rest study GCSE or A level examinations.
Universities. Although mainly supported by public funds, UK universities are not part of the public system of education. There are now nearly 100 universities in the United Kingdom. They include some of the oldest and most famous in the world. All these universities are open to anyone with the necessary academic qualifications. The Open University does not require formal academic qualifications.

Each university in the United Kingdom has a charter-a document that makes it Legal Corporation and gives it the right to grant degrees. After the 1800’s, the monarch granted these charters. The pope granted some of the earlier charters.
